TARGETED THERAPY

Targeted Therapy for GIST

Targeted therapy

Targeted therapy refers to designer drugs or medications that are intended to affect a specific defect in the cancer cell that causes the cancer cell to multiply and reduce its ability to divide, grow, and spread. Different cancer cells may have different flaws. Multiple defects may exist in the same type of cancer, and multiple cancers may have a similar defect. Targeted therapy focuses on the defect rather than the type of cancer. Drugs known as targeted cancer therapies specifically target elements in cancer cells, such as proteins or genes, that promote the growth and metastasis of the disease. It may target cells linked to cancer growth, such as blood vessel cells, or alter the tissue milieu in which cancer cells thrive. Many different forms of cancer can be treated using targeted therapy, and additionally, it can use in conjunction with other cancer therapies like chemotherapy.

What is the benefit of targeted therapy?

Targeted therapy is used at various stages of almost all cancers. It can be used to cure cancer in the early stages and in some patients, even in the advanced stages. If the canner cannot be cured, targeted therapy is used to alleviate cancer-related symptoms and extend life.

How does targeted therapy work?

Cancer develops when a cell’s DNA mutates or becomes defective. Targeted therapy drugs are designed to bypass normal cells and zero in on specific targets, which can be mutations on the surface of cancer cells or mutations within the cell. When these drugs reach their target, they may:

  • Shut down signals that allow cancer cells to grow
  • Prevent cancer cells from making new blood vessels, which feed tumors
  • Stop production of hormones that may help tumors grow
  • Repair the ability of cells to shut down if they are defective
  • Carry radiation or chemotherapy drugs directly to the mutated cell

Our cancer experts at Oncoplus Cancer Care can review a patient’s specific diagnosis and cellular pathology reports to determine if targeted therapy is a good fit for his or her needs.
